Gross margin is revenue minus cost of goods sold, divided by revenue. It measures how much you keep after paying for the product itself but before paying for overhead. Operating margin subtracts your operating expenses (rent, salaries, utilities, marketing) from gross profit and divides by revenue. It measures how efficiently your core business operates. Net margin subtracts taxes and interest from operating income. It measures how much of every revenue dollar actually becomes shareholder profit. A company with a 60% gross margin and a 5% net margin has high product profitability but heavy overhead or tax burden.
Margin is profit as a percentage of price (profit divided by price). Markup is profit as a percentage of cost (profit divided by cost). They are not the same number. A 50% markup on a $100 cost item means selling it for $150, which is only a 33% margin (the $50 profit divided by the $150 price). Confusing these two is one of the most common pricing mistakes. When a supplier quotes 'margin', they usually mean margin; when they quote 'markup', they mean markup; always ask which one before agreeing to terms.
It depends entirely on your industry. SaaS and software typically run 75% to 85% gross margins and 15% to 25% net. Retail and grocery run 25% to 45% gross and 1% to 5% net. Restaurants run about 65% gross but only 3% to 8% net because of heavy labor and rent costs. Professional services run 60% to 80% gross and 10% to 20% net. The formula is Price = Cost / (1 - Target Margin as a decimal). For example, to get a 40% margin on a $50 cost item: Price = 50 / (1 - 0.40) = 50 / 0.60 = $83.33. Gross Profit Margin = (Revenue minus Cost of Goods Sold) divided by Revenue, expressed as a percentage. For example, if you sell $10,000 worth of products that cost $4,500 to produce, your gross profit is $5,500 and your gross margin is 55%. This calculator does this automatically when you enter revenue and COGS, and also shows operating and net margin when you add opex and taxes.
Both. Gross margin tells you whether your product or service is priced correctly relative to what it costs to produce. A weak gross margin usually means you need to raise prices or cut product costs. Net margin tells you whether your overall business model is viable after overhead and taxes. A strong gross margin with a weak net margin means you are bleeding money on overhead (too much rent, too many employees, too much marketing spend). Yes. For service businesses, use labor costs (hourly wages times hours worked) as your COGS and add rent, software, marketing, and admin as operating expenses. The same gross, operating, and net margin concepts apply. Service businesses typically have higher gross margins (60% to 80%) than product businesses because there is no physical inventory, but they often have higher operating expenses (heavy payroll).

The benchmarks are approximate 2024 averages compiled from public financial data across 20+ sectors. They are meant for rough comparison only. Individual companies within the same industry can vary by 10 to 20 percentage points in either direction depending on size, location, product mix, and management quality. Use the benchmarks to understand whether you are roughly in line with peers, not as a hard target.
