The Tip Calculator helps you figure out the right tip amount and split bills between multiple people in seconds. Select from preset tip percentages (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or enter a custom amount, and instantly see the tip, total bill, and per-person breakdown. Whether you're dining out, at a salon, or sharing any bill with friends, this tool eliminates the mental math and awkward moments. All calculations happen instantly in your browser - past, free, and completely private.
Type the total bill amount before tip in the bill field. You can enter amounts with cents (e.g., $85.50). This should be the pre-tip subtotal, which may or may not include tax depending on your tipping preference.
Choose a preset tip percentage by clicking one of the quick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%), or type a custom percentage in the input field. In the US, 15-20% is standard for restaurant service, while 10-15% is common for takeout and counter service.
If you're splitting the bill, enter the number of people sharing the cost. The calculator will divide both the tip and total evenly among all people. The default is 1 person (no split).
Press Calculate Tip to see the tip amount, total bill with tip, and per-person breakdown if splitting. Copy the results to share with your group or save for your records.
In the United States, the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 20–25% is appropriate. For buffets, 10% is typical. For takeout, 10–15% is increasingly expected. Tipping customs vary by country - in many European and Asian countries, service charges are included in the bill price.
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people calculate on the post-tax total for simplicity, especially since the difference is usually small. This calculator lets you enter whichever amount you prefer. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal before tax.
This calculator splits the bill evenly among all people. If individuals want to tip different amounts, each person can calculate their own tip separately using their share of the pre-tip bill. For complex splits (different meal costs), calculate each person's subtotal individually and apply the tip percentage to each.
For food delivery, 15-20% is standard, with a minimum of $3-5 regardless of order size. Consider tipping more for large orders, bad weather, long distances, or apartment deliveries requiring stairs. For grocery delivery, $5 or 10-15% of the order total is typical. Rideshare services generally warrant 15-20% tips.
If a restaurant adds an automatic service charge or gratuity (common for large parties), you generally don't need to add an additional tip unless the service was exceptional. Check your bill carefully - a 'service charge' usually goes to the staff, but an 'administrative fee' may not. When in doubt, ask your server if the service charge goes to them directly.
